Adaptation, Punctuation, and Rate Distortion: Non-cognitivèlearning Plateaus' in Evolutionary Process

چکیده

Extending recent information-theoretic phase transition approaches to evolutionary and cognitive process via the Rate Distortion Theorem in the circumstance of interaction with a structured environment suggests that learning plateaus in cognitive systems and punctuated equilibria in evolutionary process are formally analogous, even though evolution is most certainly not cognitive. The result is curiously direct , and implies that evolutionary theories which do not produce punctuation are likely to be seriously incomplete. for identiication only. A New Definition of Aging?

I do not fundamentally differ with Michael Rose’s definition of aging and his thesis. For him aging is defined as a decline or loss (a “de-tuning”) of adaptation with increasing age, caused by a time-progressive decline of Hamilton’s forces of natural selection. To my mind, this definition is consistent with most previous definitions of aging used by the majority of evolutionary biologists. Mos...

Solving ‎‎‎Multi-objective Optimal Control Problems of chemical ‎processes ‎using ‎Hybrid ‎Evolutionary ‎Algorithm

Evolutionary algorithms have been recognized to be suitable for extracting approximate solutions of multi-objective problems because of their capability to evolve a set of non-dominated solutions distributed along the Pareto frontier‎. ‎This paper applies an evolutionary optimization scheme‎, ‎inspired by Multi-objective Invasive Weed Optimization (MOIWO) and Non-dominated Sorting (NS) strategi...

Investigating the Effect of Joint Geometry of the Gas Tungsten Arc Welding Process on the Residual Stress and Distortion using the Finite Element Method

Although a few models have been proposed for 3D simulation of different welding processes, 2D models are still more effective in design goals, thus more popular due to the short-time analysis. In this research, replacing "time" by the "third dimension of place", the gas tungsten arc welding process was simulated by the finite element method in two dimensions and in a short time with acceptable ...

'The Frozen Accident' as an Evolutionary Adaptation: A Rate Distortion Theory Perspective on the Dynamics and Symmetries of Genetic Coding Mechanisms

We survey some interpretations and related issues concerning ‘the frozen accident’ hypothesis proposed by Francis Crick and how it can be explained in terms of several natural mechanisms involving errorcorrection codes, spin glasses, symmetry breaking and the characteristic robustness of genetic networks. The approach to most of these questions involves using elements of Shannon’s rate distorti...

Evolutionary demographic models for mortality plateaus.

Plateaus in the age pattern of hazard functions at extreme ages have been discovered in large populations of medflies, Drosophila, nematodes, and people. Mueller and Rose [(1996) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 93, 15249-15253] have proposed several age-structured demographic models to represent effects of mutation accumulation and antagonistic pleiotropy on randomly evolving schedules of demographi...
